On an Overgrown Path

A Life’s Journey Through Music

On an Overgrown Path is perhaps the most introspective and intimate work by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. Each piece frames a moment from the composer’s life, from moments of profound joy to times of deep sadness.

Meritxell’s delicate and crystalline touch brings a fresh perspective to Janáček’s musical biography, guiding us seamlessly from one emotional landscape to another. Across the ten pieces included in On an Overgrown Path, she offers a rich and varied palette of colors that is, in fact, as rich as the emotional depth of the work itself.

As a counterpoint to Janáček’s work, the album also presents the world premiere of Three Pieces for Piano by Jan Fité Piguillem. In contrast to the Romantic spirit of Janáček, Jan’s music inhabits an evocative and misty realm, where melodies, motifs and scales share prominence with resonances of strings, sustained harmonies and silences.

The pianist

Selected as an emerging artist of the 2022–23 season by the prestigious institution Musical Youth of Catalonia, Meritxell Noguer is emerging as one of the fresh new voices in the world of classical piano.

Her musicality, her ability to draw a beautiful palette of sounds from the piano, and her intense, emotive performances have allowed her to build a close connection with the audience, becoming one of the signatures of her musical personality.

She approaches music from its universality, free of boundaries, with the fearless determination to bring unique, human, and meaningful interpretations of the classical repertoire to modern audiences.

In 2022, she released her first solo album, Resonance, which allowed her to perform in renowned music halls and festivals across the country, such as Festival Toca’m and Festival Portalblau. She is now working on her next album, On an Overgrown Path, featuring works by Leoš Janáček and Jan Fité Piguillem, planned to be released in 2026.

The composers

Leoš Janáček.jpg

Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) was a Czech composer whose distinctive musical voice emerged from a deep connection to the speech, rhythms, and folk traditions of his native Moravia.

Trained in Brno, Leipzig, and Vienna, he developed a unique style marked by sharp rhythms, bold harmonies, and emotional intensity. Fascinated by the melodies of everyday language, Janáček sought to translate human expression directly into music, creating works of striking immediacy and realism. His operas — including Jenůfa, Katya Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen — reveal a profound empathy for ordinary people, while his orchestral and chamber pieces show daring originality.

Today, Janáček is recognized as one of the most innovative and individual composers of the twentieth century.

Always driven by the curiosity to explore new musical realms, Jan Fité's approach to music has evolved continuously over time. He has never felt tied to a single style or genre, but at the heart of his compositions is always the need to create something unique and meaningful for each project.

Classically trained as both a composer and a double bass player, he views music creation as an act of collaboration and experimentation. He always emphasizes the value of working with live performers, as they bring a distinctiveness and depth to the music that no other element can replicate.

Motivated by the desire to avoid being labeled into only one genre, his work bridges classical with contemporary, acoustic with electronic, and tradition with innovation.
